TZ Bridge Milestone a Triumph for BCW
The completion of the new Tappan Zee Bridge towers celebrated on Tuesday by Governor Andrew Cuomo and dignitaries including BCW President and CEO Marsha Gordon, was a major victory not only for commuters but for Gordon and the BCW who have advocated for the span’s construction every step of the way.
“Being able to walk on the bridge and seeing those towers completed, was such a triumphant moment after the long journey we have all been through in fighting to make a new Tappan Zee a reality,’’ said Gordon.
Gordon’s steadfast support of a new Tappan Zee Bridge and her leadership of the “Build the Bridge Now” campaign resulted in the fast-track building of the new bridge. Gordon also served on the state’s Mass Transit Task Force, which studied options for the bridge.
In a brief ceremony surrounded by dignitaries, Cuomo said that after 20 years of false starts, the bridge finally came together because of the power of positive thinking and a focus on common ground. He said he was proud that President Obama had chosen to feature the bridge on the cover of the nation’s budget. “New York State leads the way once again for this nation and I’m proud to be part of it,” Cuomo said.
The first span of the bridge is scheduled to open sometime in the spring or summer of 2017. The bridge is set to be completed in its entirety sometime in 2018 and is on budget.
