Westchester Innovation Network Pairs High-Tech With Heavy Machinery To Test Safety Sensors

The Westchester Innovation Network (WIN), an initiative of the Business Council of Westchester (BCW), has successfully facilitated a cutting-edge collaboration between technology startup Astrabeam and Tompkins Excavating.
The pairing brought advanced sensor fusion technology directly to the field to enhance safety in the construction sector.
Astrabeam recently visited the Tompkins Excavating facility to conduct a critical sensor data experiment. The test involved mounting Astrabeam’s specialized multi-modality sensors onto one of Tompkins’ heavy-duty earthmovers. These sensors provide high-resolution imaging and detection that can penetrate environmental obstacles like dust, smoke, and debris—conditions frequently encountered on active construction sites.
For Astrabeam, the experiment represents a major step toward commercializing multi-modality sensor fusion technology for industrial use.
“It would be great if we can develop an add-on safety sensor solution to support medium-size excavators like Tompkins Excavating,” said Kevin Gu, founder and CEO of Astrabeam. “The support from BCW WIN is greatly appreciated.”
The data gathered during the day-long experiment will help Astrabeam to further refine their sensor capabilities, moving the construction industry one step closer to a safer, tech-integrated future.
The partnership highlights the practical application of the WIN program, which matches innovators with established local businesses to assess new products in real-world environments.
“At Tompkins Excavating, we are always looking for ways to improve site safety and operational efficiency,” said Stacey Tompkins, President of Tompkins Excavating. “Working with Astrabeam through the WIN program allowed us to see firsthand how next-generation technology can be integrated into our daily operations to better protect our team and equipment.”
BCW President and CEO Marsha Gordon noted that this collaboration is a prime example of how the WIN initiative can drive transformation in traditional sectors.
“WIN is bringing new ideas and technologies to all sectors, including the construction industry,” said Gordon. “By pairing innovators like Astrabeam with established leaders like Tompkins Excavating, we are proving that Westchester is the place where innovation happens and where traditional industries can evolve through smart, local partnerships.”
