Westchester County Commits Nearly $10 Million to Yonkers Affordable Housing Project

Westchester County is investing nearly $10 million in the development of 160 new affordable rental units in Yonkers, with County Executive Ken Jenkins signing legislation to move the project forward.
The legislation, enacted in partnership with the Westchester County Board of Legislators, the City of Yonkers, and BCW member MacQuesten Development, LLC, is aimed at addressing the critical need for affordable housing in the region.
“Every member of our community should have the right to make a home here, and housing needs to be available at a price point that all people can afford,” said County Executive Jenkins.
The funding package, totaling close to $10 million, will support the construction of a 16-story apartment building at 632-636 South Broadway. The county’s contribution includes $5.9 million for land acquisition and more than $4 million for infrastructure improvements, such as new ramps, landscaping, and electrical and fire suppression systems.
“This project will be an iconic statement for the Yonkers and NYC gateways, replacing a defunct former car dealership with beautiful 16 story high-end workforce housing,” said Joseph Apicella, Executive Vice President of MacQuesten Development, LLC.
The BCW plays a leadership role in affordable housing through its Smart Development Working Group. The BCW’s housing advocacy includes support for the Housing Access Voucher Program and for local industrial development agencies’ support for the state’s housing goals.
In March the BCW’s State of the Economy series featured Apicella and other developers who discussed how they are delivering affordable housing to Westchester County.
The 160 apartments will be designated for households earning between 50% and 80% of the Westchester County Area Median Income (AMI). The site plan also includes 146 parking spaces. Additional funding for the project is expected to be provided by various entities of New York State and the City of Yonkers.
“Together with Westchester County, we’re not only building homes — we’re building opportunity, dignity, and stronger communities for all our residents,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.
