Second Span of Governor Mario Cuomo Bridge to Open Tomorrow

The opening of the second span of the Mario Cuomo Bridge on Sept. 8 will mark the end of a long journey to replace the Tappan Zee, which the Business Council of Westchester was integral in bringing about.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the bridge’s opening this week, saying that four lanes of eastbound traffic would be moved onto the 3.1-mile span during an overnight operation beginning Friday. The Governor also announced that Hudson Link, the newly enhanced commuter bus service between Rockland and Westchester counties, will begin October 29 along the I-287 corridor and the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.

“The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge embodies New York’s greatness and shows the world that we’re capable of dreaming big and delivering results for the people of this state,” Governor Cuomo said. “This iconic, state-of-the-art twin-span structure will improve traffic flow, support the region’s economy, and is part of New York’s aggressive $100 billion infrastructure plan to sustain growth for generations.”

Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of the Business Council of Westchester, said the BCW was proud of the role it played in making the bridge a reality.

“The construction of a new bridge was debated for more than 20 years, so to see the final stage of its opening completed is very gratifying,’’ said Gordon, who served as President of the Build the Bridge Now Coalition. “The BCW is proud to have played such an important role in helping to bring the community together to work out differences that allowed the bridge to move forward. Thank you to everyone who was involved.’’

Gordon also congratulated BCW member ArtsWestchester on its role in overseeing an arts competition among New York State artist to create two iconic sculptures to be placed on the Tarrytown (Westchester County) and South Nyack (Rockland County) sides of the bridge’s dedicated bicycle and walking path in 2019.
