Phelps Debuts Newly Renovated $8.8M Medical/Surgical Unit Featuring Private Rooms

Congratulations to BCW Member Phelps Hospital on the unveiling this week of an $8.8M renovation of its fifth floor medical/surgical unit, which has been transformed into a state-of-the-art space with brand new walls, finishes, furniture and equipment. This upgrade, which took approximately one year, is part of the hospital’s ongoing initiative to modernize and enhance patient experience by creating an atmosphere that is welcoming, nurturing and comforting.
The upgrade focused on the hospital’s north wing, converting double rooms into 15 single rooms, each with a private bathroom and some offering panoramic views of the Hudson River. The south wing received cosmetic updates to match the upgraded north wing. The new unit features three isolation rooms with an attached anteroom for patients with contagious respiratory conditions, and two comfort care rooms, outfitted for end-of-life and palliative care. The modernization also extended to support staff spaces, including the nursing office, nursing station, nourishment station, staff facilities, equipment storage, and break room.
“These contemporary enhancements are crucial for providing the highest level of care to our patients,” said Beata Mastalerz, DNP, RN, Executive Director of Phelps Hospital. “By offering private rooms and modernized facilities, we are enhancing the healing environment and ensuring comfort and privacy for our patients and their families. This project reflects our commitment to servicing the community with world-class healthcare.”
The two comfort care rooms were renovated through generous community donations, while the rest of the project was funded by Northwell Health’s capital investment.
Phelps Hospital, part of Northwell Health, is a full-service 218-bed acute care community hospital in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. With more than 1,700 employees and 1,400-plus medical staff members representing 60 medical specialties, Phelps offers one of the broadest ranges of community hospital services in Westchester County.
