Penn Station Access Bronx & Westchester Community Council Holds Inaugural Meeting

The newly-created Penn Station Access Bronx & Westchester Community Council held its inaugural meeting on Thursday, September 26.

The Community Council is co-chaired by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and Westchester County Executive George Latimer. Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of The Business Council of Westchester, accepted an invitation to serve on the council and attended the first meeting at Mercy College in the Bronx.

The council was formed to educate the public and key stakeholders on the Penn Station Access MTA project that will link four new stations in the East Bronx in order to create a one-seat ride directly into Penn Station.

The purpose of the Community Council includes not only disseminating information to the public, but also making sure legislatures and key stakeholders in the Bronx, Westchester, and the region remain educated and engaged throughout the life of the project.

“The Penn Station Access Project will be transformative for Westchester and the region, and I am honored to serve on the new Community Council,” said Gordon. “This project is vital to the economic health of the region and will help propel the transit-oriented developments currently happening in our urban centers, particularly along the Sound Shore.”

The Penn Station Access Project will deliver modern, new transportation options to underserved areas of the Bronx while linking communities across Westchester and the region with improved access to jobs and services. Commuters from the Sound Shore towns of New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Rye, Port Chester and Harrison would, for the first time, have a one-seat ride to the West Side of Manhattan. The plan calls for New Haven Line trains to split after New Rochelle, with some trains heading to Grand Central and others into Penn Station.
