The Business Council of Westchester (BCW) hosted its annual Westchester County Board of Legislators Reception on Tuesday, bringing together county lawmakers and the business community for a dialogue on the most pressing issues facing our region.
The event, held at the Cambria Hotel in White Plains, provided a valuable platform for legislators to articulate the top concerns of their constituents, with a clear focus on the challenges of affordability, housing, and development.
“This relationship that we have with the Board of Legislators solidified itself when Legislator Ben Boykin met with the BCW. He told us that the legislators want to be able to sit down and discuss bills that they’re going to introduce,” said BCW Executive Vice President and COO John Ravitz, who moderated the discussion. “We can agree to disagree, but if we don’t sit across the table from each other, how are we ever going to be able to move forward? We hope the Board of Legislators will continue to look at the members of the BCW as a resource on numerous issues.”
Nine county legislators attended, and they offered insights into the diverse needs of their districts. The participating legislators included Erika Pierce, Benjamin Boykin, Catherine Parker, James Nolan, David Tubiolo, Jewel Williams Johnson, David Imamura, Judah Holstein, and Tyrae Woodson-Samuels.
A strong consensus emerged among most legislators regarding the paramount concerns of their constituents: affordability, housing, development, and flooding. These interconnected issues underscore the economic pressures felt by many Westchester residents and the need for strategic planning to accommodate growth while mitigating environmental risks.
Many legislators expressed a shared hope and commitment to collaborating with Westchester’s vibrant business community to find innovative and sustainable solutions to these challenges. This sentiment highlights the recognition that a strong partnership between government and the private sector is essential for fostering a thriving and resilient county.
Beyond these overarching themes, legislators also brought to light several other critical issues impacting their districts. These included:
- The excessive cost of childcare: A significant burden for many families, impacting workforce participation and economic stability.
- Water contamination in northern Westchester: A crucial environmental and public health concern requiring immediate attention and long-term solutions for residents and businesses.
- The threat of federal funding cuts due to the county’s immigrant policies: A complex issue with potentially far-reaching implications for county services and programs.
The BCW’s annual Board of Legislators Reception serves as a vital forum for fostering understanding and collaboration between Westchester’s legislative body and its business leaders. As a follow up to Wednesday’s event, the BCW’s Clean Energy Action Coalition will schedule a series of meetings with the Board of Legislators to discuss the challenges that must be addressed regarding the changing energy landscape and building the new renewable energy infrastructure.
