Tour of REELEX Packaging Solutions Provides Lawler with Insight on Future of U.S. Manufacturing

BCW Member REELEX Packaging Solutions, a global leader in packaging machinery manufacturing and export, recently welcomed Congressman Mike Lawler to its Patterson facility for a tour of its manufacturing floor and a discussion on the future of U.S. manufacturing.

Congressman Lawler’s visit highlighted REELEX’s role as both an innovator and exporter, with a strong workforce that includes veterans and skilled trades professionals. The Congressman toured the company’s production floor, where REELEX engineers and technicians design and build patented packaging systems exported worldwide. The October 2 tour was arranged by BCW Executive Vice President and COO John Ravitz who participated in the tour.

David Gerhart, CEO of REELEX, underscored the importance of supportive tax and economic policies to keep New York State manufacturers competitive: “As a manufacturer and exporter based in New York State, we’re proud to contribute to U.S. economic strength through innovation, skilled jobs, veteran employees, and international trade. But current tax policies present real challenges that directly affect our ability to grow, compete, and reinvest in our workforce. Uncertainty around R&D expensing, rising state and local tax burdens, and a lack of workforce development incentives make long-term planning difficult here in New York,” said Gerhart.

Gerhart pointed out that while New York manufacturers are investing heavily in safety, training, and apprenticeships, they face competitive disadvantages compared to other states. “Too often, the state creates barriers instead of encouraging investment. The result is that companies like ours have to ask the tough question: should we reinvest in facilities here in New York, or look elsewhere?”

The conversation also addressed international competitiveness, including challenges around intellectual property enforcement and the need for greater clarity on tariff schemes.

Gerhart added, “Tax policy should reward growth, not penalize it. By working together – manufacturers, business leaders, and policymakers – we can build a fairer system that strengthens American manufacturing and keeps jobs here at home.”

Congressman Lawler praised REELEX for its innovation and contribution to the region, noting the importance of policies that sustain small and mid-sized manufacturers who are vital to the U.S. economy.
