More Time Needed for Feedback on Education Plan
The BCW has joined a coalition of business, education and civil rights groups asking the State Education Commissioner to provide eight more weeks of public comment before the state unveils its plan for how it will meet requirements of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act.
Under Every Student Succeeds Act — a broad federal education law passed in December that replaced No Child Left Behind and provides states more flexibility in regarding assessments and accountability — the state is required to submit its plans by March 2017 with an extension until July.
The coalition sent a letter this week to the Education Department and its commissioner seeking more time for comment. The coalition includes the pro-Common Core High Achievement New York and The Education Trust-New York, as well as The Business Council of New York State and statewide parent and business organizations, many of which have representatives who are participating in the state’s ESSA Think Tank.
