The Organization
The United Way of Westchester and Putnam serves Westchester and Putnam Counties, which are located in the lower Hudson Valley region of New York State. Our communities are the home to more than 1 million diverse residents and the workplace of many more.
The mission of United Way of Westchester and Putnam is to advance the common good; by helping local residents to be self-sufficient and thrive in a stronger community. We do this by getting to the roots of poverty through education, helping residents to achieve financial stability and connecting them to resources in time of need or crisis. United Way has a unique model of bringing volunteers, nonprofits, advocates, elected officials, and businesses together to evaluate and solve pressing issues in our shared community.
Our staff team is comprised of sixteen core United Way associates and twelve associates in the United Way’s Hudson Valley 2-1-1 operation, which is located in our headquarters building and for which we are the fiscal agent. The annual core United Way operating budget is $2.3 million; United Way’s Hudson Valley 2-1-1 operating budget is $ 1.3 million. The Board is comprised of up to 45 members and represents a broad cross-section of the community served by the organization. Our United Way received a top level Business Performance Overview designation from United Way Worldwide, which assesses performance, community impact and resources and tools and a four star Charity Navigator rating.

Responsibilities:
Under broad policy direction from the Board of Directors, this person operates as the President and Chief Executive Officer for the United Way of Westchester and Putnam and serves as a principal professional resource to the Board and Staff of the
organization. The President/CEO is the “Chief Mobilizer,” leveraging the power of local, state and national relationships and working across private, public and corporate sectors to substantially improve health and human services in the community. S/He is the steward of the United Way brand in the community and is dedicated to the finest execution of our mission work through impactful initiatives in the areas of Education, Income, and Health. S/He also supervises the operation of United Way’s 2-1-1 regional helpline on a daily basis, as well as during times of disaster.
S/He ensures that the United Way raises the appropriate resources needed to accomplish the organization’s goals and that the Board appropriates funds according to the organization’s multi-year community impact plan. S/He will be expected to advocate for the organization’s public policy agenda and act as the chief spokesperson for the organization.
S/He possesses a high level of broad business and management skills and is responsible for leading all internal and external operations of the organization. S/he will ably supervise a senior managerial team, as well as other professional staff and is dedicated to inclusiveness, diversity, and Board and staff development.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of substantial executive experience working in the non-profit sector (United Way experience is desirable) and collaborating with volunteers, individual and corporate donors, government agencies/officials, school leadership, a diverse Board, the media, and others. Alternatively, the candidate will have extensive experience in the leadership and management of other organizations of comparable size and mission.
Applicants also should have a strong background in all forms of fundraising, possess strengths in communication, customer focus, influence, initiative, innovation, ethics/integrity, persistence and high energy.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, CRM programs and social media is preferred. Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed is required.
Compensation:
The compensation package is commensurate with experience and includes medical, dental, pension, vacation, sick pay leave and other insurance benefits.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Public Administration, Education, Social Work or related field required. Masters/Graduate degree preferred. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted.
