DOROT’s Tech Coaching Program Connects Corporate Volunteers With Older Adult Tech Users
This December, local non-profit agency and BCW member, DOROT Westchester welcomed a group of fourteen volunteers from Prestige Consumer Health headquarters in Tarrytown, who provided 1:1 Tech Coaching to older adults at DOROT’s office in White Plains. Part of their annual “Give Back Day,” the Prestige volunteers arrived with bagels, cookies, and a lot of energy. The older adults brought their laptops, tablets, smartphones, and many questions. At the end of the half-day event, the older adult attendees felt more informed and confident. Many volunteers were surprised how much the older adults already knew and even laughed to admit they had learned a thing or two!
DOROT Westchester provides crucial social connections for older adults throughout Westchester County. Many of DOROT’s programs focus on the mutual benefits of engaging older adults with volunteers. Tech Coaching is one such program, where corporate groups or individual volunteers coach older adults in developing and growing their skills in using technology as a means of staying connected to people, community, and resources.
When asked what they would like to share with other companies considering this type of volunteer opportunity with DOROT, responses from Prestige Consumer Health volunteers were universally positive. One employee said, “It was a no pressure, enjoyable experience – would highly recommend,” while another described it as “a great program; worth partnering.”
Many older adults reach out to DOROT to take advantage of the Tech Coaching program, and volunteers are always in demand. For companies looking for a unique “day of service” option, DOROT’s Tech Coaching provides authentic and impactful connection with older adults in Westchester County. For companies that encourage individual employee volunteering, Tech Coaches are also needed to help people at their homes.
