BURKE REHABILITATION SECURES $1 MILLION IN STATE CAPITAL FUNDING TO SUPPORT NEW CT SCANNER SUITE

Burke Rehabilitation, a member of the Montefiore Health System, today announced that it has been granted $1 million in state capital funding to build a CT scanner suite at Burke’s 150-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in White Plains. The CT scanner will save time in diagnosing and treating patients’ illnesses and injuries, improving outcomes and creating a more seamless care experience for patients who are today sent to other facilities in the area for CT scans.

“On behalf of everyone at Burke, I thank Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, Senator Mayer, and Assembly Member Paulin for their support and leadership in bringing our vision of onsite CT scanning to life,” said Burke Rehabilitation’s Executive Director Scott Edelman, MBA, CPA, CFE. “Patient-centered care and innovation are at the core of who we are as an organization, and the ability to more effectively diagnose brain injuries onsite will help us improve the patient experience and outcomes among our most complex patients. We are extremely grateful for the support of our trusted elected officials and look forward to continued collaboration to deliver the most advanced physical medicine and rehabilitative care possible.”

The new CT scanner suite is made possible by $500,000 secured by Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, $250,000 secured by Senator Shelley Mayer, and $250,000 secured by Assembly Member Amy Paulin. The funding, part of New York’s Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability and Technology Program, will be deployed in 2025.

“I applaud Burke’s continued innovation to provide the best possible care for patients in our community who require physical and medical rehabilitation,” said Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. “I am proud to deliver $500,000 to support Burke’s efforts to improve patients’ experience as they recover from traumatic illnesses and injuries, right here in Westchester.”

The addition of a CT scanner suite complements several recent expansions across Burke’s continuum of care. In 2024, Burke implemented inpatient hemodialysis, allowing Burke to now care for post-acute patients with kidney and late-stage renal disease. The organization also expanded its outpatient footprint in 2024. Further growth is on the horizon in 2025 and beyond, as Burke works to introduce new services to improve its care and experience as it serves more individuals.

Senator Shelley B. Mayer said, “I am pleased to have secured $250,000 for Burke Rehabilitation, on top of the funding Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Member Paulin secured, to ensure Burke can continue providing high quality care. Burke has long been a pillar in our community for excellent physical and medical rehabilitation care for both inpatient and outpatient settings. I look forward to continued collaboration with Burke to improve and expand access to comprehensive rehabilitation care.”

Burke anticipates that, once fully functional, the new CT scanner suite will serve an average of 300 patients per year. These are patients that, today, need to be transported to another medical facility for scans, which delays their diagnosis and treatment process. Currently, if a Burke clinician suspects a stroke patient may be experiencing a second stroke, the patient must be transported to another hospital for scanning, interpretation, and follow-up. This process wastes critical time that could be used to begin treatment. An in-house CT suite will allow scans to be conducted onsite and read electronically, drastically reducing delays. This improvement not only saves time but also has the potential to save lives by enabling the rapid diagnosis and treatment of suspected or confirmed brain bleeds.

“It is always an honor to play a role in improving the healthcare of New Yorkers and to this end I’m so pleased to have secured $250,000 for Burke to help expand the capabilities of their rehabilitation hospital,” said Assembly Member Amy Paulin. “This funding will improve and simplify the experience for patients recovering from complex brain injuries by allowing them to receive CT scans on-site at Burke. I thank State Senators Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Shelley Mayer for the funding that they secured for this initiative, and I thank Burke for their continued exemplary service to our community.”

Burke expects to begin construction on the CT scanner suite in the fall of 2025. The suite is anticipated to be operational and serving patients in the winter of 2025.
