Berlin Productions Goes Green

After deciding last year to focus on protecting the environment, Berlin Productions, a Westchester-based marketing and promotion agency, has achieved Green Business Certification from the Green Business Partnership.
“As a company, we now operate in a healthier and more ecologically conscious environment,” said Rick Berlin, President and CEO of Berlin Productions. “We are amazed at how much waste we were able to eliminate.”
Determined to reduce their environmental footprint, protect the planet for future generations, and promote environmental stewardship at all levels, Berlin Productions began to minimize the company’s environmental impact. As with any lofty goal, the journey began with small steps that often ran into roadblocks.
As tenants, Berlin could not permanently change the way their building operates, and as a small company, the staff had little free time to devote to a comprehensive sustainability initiative that would require change in every aspect of its operations.
To facilitate the changes, the Green Business Partnership’s internship program trained Melissa Gleave and placed her with Berlin, where she guided the firm through the certification process and landed a full-time job as an Assistant Account Executive and social media consultant. Berlin’s Green Team, consisting of Gleave, along with VP of Communications/Creative Director Steven Klapow and VP of Sales and New Business Development Connie Gallo, found plenty of changes to make.
Identifying attainable ways to reduce energy, the company switched to energy-efficient lighting and ensured that lights located in vacant areas of the office remained off. They activated standby mode for computers during down time and ensured that all appliances met Energy Star-rated standards. They also reused items like cardboard boxes and jettisoned plastic for ceramic mugs and metal utensils.
In addition, the company increased its recycling efforts, a process that proved to be convenient and cost-effective, and began storing paper files online. Team members encouraged to take advantage of videoconferencing, telecommuting, carpooling and public transportation whenever possible.
For Berlin Productions, going green continues well beyond just getting certified. Plans include purchasing duplex printers, which print on both sides of a sheet of paper, using packaging material made from recycled content and researching green alternatives when making purchases.
“The Berlin Productions team persevered through the unique challenges they faced, and we’re confident they’ll continue to work to improve the way things are being done and encourage a change in mindset throughout the company,” said Dani Glaser, Founder and Program Director of the Green Business Partnership.

The GBP was founded in 2009 as the Westchester Green Business Challenge, a program of the Business Council of Westchester in partnership with Westchester County and Green Team Spirit LLC. In 2014, it expanded to offer an official green business certification. In 2017, responding to widespread demand for access to the GBP’s turnkey system, it relaunched as the Green Business Partnership and made the program available to businesses throughout New York State.
