Westchester Loses Noted Greenburgh Legislator
Lois Bronz, longtime Westchester County Legislator and Greenburgh Town Board member, passed away on Monday at the age of 90. She had served on the town board for 16 years and was the first African-American woman to be elected to the Westchester County Board of Legislators in 1994, serving until 2009. She chaired the board from 2002 to 2004.
Bronz was active in many community organizations and was particularly focused on children’s advocacy. She served on the board of Children’s Village in Dobbs Ferry, the Westchester Community Opportunity Program, the Westchester Coalition, the Hudson Valley Council for Senior Citizens, United Way of Westchester, and the Westchester Arts Council, among others. The Union Child Day Care Center in Greenburgh was renamed the Lois Bronz Children’s Center in 2006 in her honor.
“Unlike some elected officials who lose touch with their constituencies after years in office, Lois was deeply involved in her community, always advocating for those she represented, especially children,’’ said Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of the Business Council of Westchester. “She was very gracious and soft-spoken, but was not afraid to raise her voice when it was warranted. We will miss her.”
