Jenkins Outlines Vision for Westchester in First State of the County Address
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins delivered his inaugural State of the County address, emphasizing a strong fiscal foundation and outlining key initiatives for economic growth and community development.
The address, attended by BCW President and CEO Marsha Gordon and Executive Vice-President and COO John Ravitz, underscored the pro-economic development working partnership between the business community and the County Executive’s office.
Jenkins proudly announced the county’s robust financial standing, highlighting the AAA bond ratings received from both S & P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings. Further bolstering this positive outlook, Moody’s Investors Service recently upgraded Westchester County’s financial outlook from stable to positive, assigning Aa1 issuer and debt ratings. This fiscal strength, Jenkins asserted, positions the county for continued progress and investment.
A significant announcement was a new partnership between Westchester County and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). This collaboration aims to deliver top-tier engineering education within the region, creating opportunities for local talent, particularly young people and working professionals, to access cutting-edge STEM education and meet the demands of the evolving workforce.
Addressing a long-standing priority for the BCW, Jenkins unveiled a new proposal to enhance the Westchester County Airport terminal. Emphasizing that this is not an expansion project, he stated the focus is on modernizing the facility to improve the overall traveler experience. This initiative aligns with the BCW’s advocacy efforts over the past decade to upgrade the airport infrastructure.
Jenkins also highlighted the county’s commitment to supporting small businesses and the ongoing work of the Work Force Investment Board in connecting residents with employment opportunities and fostering a skilled workforce. These programs are crucial for maintaining a vibrant and thriving local economy.
In addition to economic development initiatives, Jenkins touched upon investments in affordable housing, infrastructure improvements, public safety measures, and mental health services. He also recognized the dedication of the county workforce and emphasized environmental sustainability efforts.
Concluding his address, Jenkins reiterated his optimistic vision for Westchester County, emphasizing a commitment to progress, stability, and community strength. His first State of the County address signaled a proactive approach to economic growth and a continued collaborative relationship with the Business Council of Westchester.
