Two Retail Developments Bode Well for Westchester’s Economy

Construction underway on Amazon facility in Hawthorne.

In what are encouraging signs for Westchester’s economy, two significant retail developments were in the news this week. In the Town of Mount Pleasant, BCW Member Amazon is moving ahead on construction of a 150,000-square-foot facility at 211 Saw Mill River Road (Route 9A) in Hawthorne. The new facility will feature 136,000 square feet of warehouse space and 14,000 square feet of office space.

The $99 million project is being constructed on a 10-acre property that was formerly the site of Green Valley Nursery. When completed, there will also be a two-level garage for 181 passenger cars, 597 van parking spaces, 12 truck load spaces and 62 van loading spaces. Last year, the Mount Pleasant Industrial Development Agency (IDA) voted approval of approximately $3.8 million in sales tax exemptions for the project. When completed, the Amazon site will provide 100 full- and part-time jobs as well as 1,000 construction jobs throughout the duration of the project. Town Supervisor Carl Fulgenzi said the new Amazon site will generate about $1.5 million property tax revenue annually, most of which will go to the Mount Pleasant School District.

Meanwhile in neighboring Town of Greenburgh, BJ’s Wholesale Club is going to be taking over the space occupied by a recently closed Kmart in the Crossroads Shopping Center. Town Supervisor Paul Feiner said the BJ’s store is anticipated to start construction soon with a targeted opening at the end of this year. Other new tenants coming to the Crossroads Shopping Center include Duck Donuts and Phenix Salon Suites. The PGA Superstore opened in the former Modell’s space in August 2021.
