BCW Westchester Innovation Network participant Laronix was a panelist at an overview of Westchester’s life science community on Tuesday.

Laronix’s COO, Mousa Ahmadi, discussed how his company’s MIRA Voice device is using artificial intelligence to help people with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy and other conditions regain the ability to speak clearly. Laronix is currently refining the device with patients at the Burke Neurological Institute in White Plains.

Ahmadi explained that the initial success of the device has allowed Laronix to expand its institutional collaboration to about 50 hospitals in the United States and Australia.

“We have around 130 patients from the trials that have been speaking through our device. It’s very inspirational moments that we see with the patients. The first thing they say to a family member is that they love them,” said Ahmadi, who announced that Laronix is generating revenue as of November. “We are very excited about growing in Westchester.”

The Westchester County Office of Economic Development and Builds Bio+, a New York City-based non-profit that connects the life sciences community with real estate professionals, organized the event at the New York Medical College. In addition to Laronix, participating life science companies included Quadrus Medical Technologies, BJH Advisors and Cognition Therapeutics.

Deborah Novick, Westchester County’s director of entrepreneurship and innovation, explained how 160 life science companies in the county have generated $20 billion in economic activity over the past 10 years.

“Right here in Westchester, we have 20 percent of the private sector life sciences workforce in the state,” said Novick. “We’re working very hard to help nurture more entities.”

The BCW WIN is an initiative that invites companies from around the world to embed their products with BCW members to drive innovation and economic development in the county.

“Laronix represents an exciting innovation in the medical devices sector that will have tremendous effect on the lives of patients who have lost their voice. The WIN program seeks to bring more entrepreneurs with impactful ideas to work with our members and develop tomorrow’s life-changing products,” said BCW president and CEO Marsha Gordon.

The BCW WIN program is embarking on its fourth year and is accepting applications for 2025. If you are interested in participating in our program, please fill out the form here. If you have any additional questions, please contact Luiz Aragon at laragon@thebcw.org.
