New Lt. Governor Makes First Meeting with Westchester Business Community

In what was the new Lieutenant Governor’s first chance to meet with the Westchester business community, Brian Benjamin took center stage as the latest guest at the BCW’s Political Leadership Series this week. A former state legislator, he assumed the position when his predecessor, Kathy Hochul became governor.

In his remarks, Lt. Gov. Benjamin presented an overview of the Governor’s proposed 2023 State Budget. The wide-ranging presentation broke out major areas in the $216 billion proposal including $32.8 billion for infrastructure projects, $31 billion for investment in teachers and schools, $224 million for law enforcement and gun violence initiatives, and $24 billion in a 5-year comprehensive housing plan.

In responding to questions, he addressed several topics of particular interest to BCW members including:

  • The Governor’s support for extending full table gaming licenses for three additional casinos in the state with MGM Resorts Empire City in Yonkers being a leading contender.
  • A commitment to take a collaborative approach with the businesses and alternative energy advocates to assure that the state’s shift to clean energy alternatives does not jeopardize the availability of adequate energy supplies during the transition period.
  • Support for small businesses including $1 billion to fund innovative businesses and tax credits for COVID-related expenses.

The Political Leadership Series features top prominent figures from all levels and branches of government and politics. Recent guests have included the Sen. Chuck Schumer, US Senate Majority Leader, Gov. Hochul, State Attorney General Leticia James, and the leaders of the State Senate and Assembly.

The series continues March 7 at 9am with Janno Leiber, new Chairman and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Register online.
