Local Students Represent YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester at National Changemakers Summit

White Plains High School Students Propose Anonymous Drug Drop-Off & Overdose Prevention Station Project in Charlotte, NC

Westchester County, NY (June 24, 2026) — The YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester proudly welcomes back White Plains High School students Mario N. and Michelle A., who recently participated in the 2026 YMCA Changemakers Summit, held June 16–18 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Mario and Michelle were selected as two of just 80 students from across the country to attend this national leadership experience. Now in its fifth year, the Changemakers Summit brings together rising 10th–12th grade students to develop innovative solutions to pressing challenges in their communities. Participants pitch project ideas with the opportunity to receive funding to bring those ideas to life.

At this year’s summit, Mario and Michelle presented a proposal for an Anonymous Drug Drop-Off & Overdose Prevention Station. Their concept focuses on creating a safe, judgment-free space near their local high school where community members can responsibly dispose of unused drugs, access overdose prevention tools, and learn life-saving response strategies. The proposed station would include resources such as Narcan, educational materials, and potentially enhanced safety features like automated emergency alerts, pending community input and feasibility.

While their project was not selected as a finalist, their commitment to addressing critical community needs reflects the leadership and compassion that define the YMCA’s mission.
“We are incredibly proud of Mario and Michelle for stepping forward as leaders and using their voices to address real challenges in our community,” said Shannon Casey, Director of Camp and Teen Services. “Programs like the Changemakers Summit empower young people to lead with purpose, and we’re excited to see how their ideas continue to grow and create impact here in Westchester County.”

The YMCA Changemakers Summit is part of the Y’s broader Changemaker Strategy, which focuses on equipping young people with the skills, experiences, and support they need to become active contributors in their communities. This approach is grounded in three key elements: fostering strong values, providing meaningful experiences, and creating environments where young people can lead and thrive.
