Fireboat McKean Docked in Stony Point Awaits National Designation

The Fireboat McKean Preservation Project organization owns the retired FDNY Marine Co. 1 John D. McKean Fireboat. Among the many calls the McKean Fireboat responded to during her nearly six decades of service, three calls stand out far and above all the others. Most notably the Staten Island Ferry’s Manhattan Terminal fire in 1991, the rescue and recovery operations during the terror attacks at the World Trade Center in 2001, and the “Miracle on the Hudson” river landing in 2009.

Once restored, the McKean Fireboat will have the ability to invite people of all ages to learn about history of the McKean Fireboat, the history of fireboats and introduce the idea to young visitors who board the McKean to possibly consider a career in the maritime industry. Visitors aboard the McKean Fireboat will be able to take in the breathtaking views of the Hudson River corridor. This experience will demand each visitor to consider their own relationship to the Hudson River, its history and its future.

The McKean Fireboat is a tremendous historic asset to NYC and the Hudson River Valley communities. It is paramount that we safeguard this irreplaceable treasure. In December, NY State Parks Review Board approved the Fireboat McKean’s nomination to be added to the State Register for Historic Places. NY State Park’s Preservation Office and the McKean Fireboat organization prepared the McKean Fireboat’s nomination for submission to the National Parks Service (NPS) with the intent that the McKean Fireboat also be listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well. As of June 17, 2023, the McKean Fireboat has been placed on the NPS’s “Pending List.” Once the NPS approves the McKean Fireboat’s nomination, the McKean Fireboat will be one of only eight fireboats in the nation to be placed on this prestigious list.
