Children’s Remote Learning Supported by Westchester Institute for Human Development
The Westchester Institute for Human Development is on the front line providing critical medical, clinical, and social services to individuals with disabilities, vulnerable children, and families. The institute’s clients include 450 children in foster care and their families. The Covid-19 crisis has put some of these children at a greater disadvantage than children in the general population because some of the institute’s clients do not have access to devices to participate in remote school or therapeutic activities.
The WIHD was able to secure funding from the Redlich Horwitz Foundation and partnered with Staples of Elmsford to secure the delivery of 30 Chromebooks to distribute to these children. In April, the Redlich Horwitz Foundation began providing remote-learning and teleconferencing grants of up to $40,000 to governmental and non-governmental organizations that serve children in foster care in New York State outside of New York City. WIHD social workers have also gone above and beyond by delivering groceries, diapers and other critical supplies to families’ homes when needed.
