BCW’s Green Business Partnership Certifies Berlin Productions

L-R Dani Glaser, Green Business Partnership; Connie Gallo, Rick Berlin and Melissa Gleave, Berlin Productions; Scott Fernqvist, Green Business Partnership; Dr. Marsha Gordon, Business Council of Westchester; Peter McCartt, Westchester County Government.

As a small company, Berlin Production’s staff didn’t find themselves with much “free” time to devote to a comprehensive sustainability initiative that requires change in every aspect of operations.

So, the Green Business Partnership (GBP) – a joint effort of the Business Council of Westchester and Westchester County Government – connected them with Melissa Gleaves, an Iona College student trained through the GBP’s internship program. She not only shepherded the firm through the certification process, but also landed a full-time job with Berlin as an Account Executive & Social Media Consultant.

As tenants rather than building owners, Berlin was limited in terms of what changes they could make, but still found plenty of ways to make a significant impact, including:

Energy Reduction

  • Installed energy efficient lighting
  • Switched/switching to Energy Star-rated appliances and electronics
  • Activated standby mode on computers

Waste and Recycling

  • Clearly marked recycling bins
  • Online file storage

Green Purchasing

  • Reusable mugs and utensils
  • Electronic billing
  • Green cleaning products
  • 100% recycled paper

Transportation

  • Allowing telecommuting and video conferencing
  • Carpooling and use of public transportation

These efforts, combined with those of so many other companies joining and becoming certified through the Green Business Partnership, are making the Westchester business community more sustainable and profitable. Congratulations again to Berlin Productions!
