BCW Partners with the United Way of Westchester and Putnam on Not-for-Profit Summit on May 6

The not-for-profit and business sectors unite as the United Way of Westchester and Putnam takes its popular Not-for-Profit Leadership Summit to the next level in a new partnership with the Business Council of Westchester.

“Building Community” is the theme of this year’s Not-For-Profit Leadership Summit on May 6 from 8:00 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Doubletree in Tarrytown. The event, now in its 17^thyear, is getting a reboot, adding new partnerships with academia, government and businesses work together to help “build community”. It is being underwritten in part by the TD Bank Foundation.

Also new this year: participants can obtain valuable continuing education credits in finance, social work and fundraising, by attending some of the 16 workshops being offered throughout the day.

“Today non-profit organizations recognize that the key to growing and thriving – not just surviving – is to more closely emulate what for-profit businesses have been doing so successfully for years,” said Alana Sweeny, President and CEO of the United Way of Westchester and Putnam. “We are excited to announce this new partnership with the Business Council of Westchester, which we believe will add tremendous value to an event which has been a staple in the not-for-profit world for 17 years now.”

Marsha Gordon said that the BCW has long recognized that the not-for-profit community is part of the county’s economic engine.

“More than 14 percent of our members are not-for-profit organizations,’’ said Gordon. “In response to this, we have strengthened the BCW Not-For-Profit Council, adding new initiatives to provide not-for-profit members with guidance and support. The BCW’s partnership with United Way on the Not-for-Profit Leadership Summit is an outgrowth of these efforts.”

The Not-For-Profit Leadership Summit will feature breakfast and luncheon keynote speakers, morning and afternoon breakout sessions and an afternoon networking reception.

The breakfast keynote speaker will be Timothy Hall, President of Mercy College, and the luncheon speaker will be Eric Klinenberg, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University and author of Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life (Crown, 2018).

In addition to the keynote speakers, breakout sessions will be held in the morning and afternoon, on topics such as: confronting the non-profit racial leadership gap; communications skills that build community in the 21^stcentury; working the room at special events and how to share your not for profit’s story through PR, digital marketing and video.
