Carmen Graham, LPN of Wartburg Wins International Daisy

Wartburg recently hosted its Salute to Nurses Reception in celebration of Nursing Week. Carmen Graham, LPN, a nurse in the Skilled Nursing division of Wartburg Senior Living and Healthcare, was surprised with the hospital’s first-ever international Daisy Award.

The Daisy Award recognizes the skillful and compassionate care nurses provide. The award was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by his family after he died in 1999 due to complications of an auto-immune disease. Patrick’s family was so moved by the compassionate care he received during his eight-week hospitalization that they felt compelled to acknowledge the care nurses provide. Currently, the award is given to nurses in the U.S. and thirty-one other countries and territories.

During the ceremony held inside Wartburg’s Acute Care Rehab Facility, Carmen was presented the award by Senior Nurse Executive, Carleen Evans, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE. Said Carleen, “Carmen received three nominations for the DAISY Award. She is that special nurse you would want to take care of your loved one around the clock, if possible. This speaks to the extraordinary care she consistently provides to our residents regardless of their presenting conditions. Carmen, thank you for being present for all our residents. Congratulations!”

Administrator Bridget Zimmerman, MBA, LNHA, said, “We are so pleased that our Senior Nurse Executive, Dr. Carleen Evans, has partnered with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This award showcases the clinical excellence, compassionate care and commitment of our Registered and Licensed Practical Nurses. We are proud to partner with The Daisy Foundation to continue to share the long-lasting positive impact of Wartburg Nurses. “

Following the ceremony award recognizing Carmen and her colleagues for their outstanding work in the healthcare profession, Wartburg CEO and President David J. Gentner, Ed. D said, “We are proud to be among the post-acute providers participating in The DAISY Award program. Nurses are heroes every day. It’s important that we recognize their work in this sector, and The DAISY Foundation provided another way for senior care and housing providers to do that.”
