BCW Urges Approval of Starwood Proposal
The creation of 1,800 construction jobs and 972 full-time jobs, as well as more than $60 million in tax revenue for the Village of Port Chester are just a few of the many benefits of a mixed-use development proposal for the former United Hospital site, according to the Business Council of Westchester.
In an appeal to Mayor Dennis Pilla and the Village Board of Trustees at a hearing this week, the BCW endorsed the $300 million development proposal by Starwood Capital Group, saying it was an example of smart economic development that would create new excitement and growth for the Village of Port Chester.
“One of the biggest challenges Westchester faces is keeping our talent living and working in the County,” said BCW Executive Vice President and COO John Ravitz, who spoke at the hearing on Tuesday. “When completed this project will be able to serve as a true example of how a community and a responsible developer can create new opportunities that will bring lifelong positive changes for its residents, by generating both new revenue and private sector jobs to the village and the county.”
Starwood wants to convert the former hospital site at 406 Boston Post Road into a development that will include a 135-room hotel, 217,000 square feet of medical office space, 90,000 square feet for retail or small restaurants, 500 residential units targeting young professionals, 230 age-restricted apartment units for people 55 and over and about an acre of open public space.
United Hospital closed in 2006. Starwood bought the property that same year.
