New York Medical College Awarded $10 Million Department of Defense Grant to Advance Emergency and Disaster Medicine
Noam Bramson, Executive Vice President of the Business Council of Westchester (BCW), was pleased to attend the announcement of a $10 million Department of Defense (DOD) grant awarded to BCW member New York Medical College (NYMC) in Valhalla. The significant investment will support groundbreaking research and training initiatives aimed at improving lifesaving medical care in situations where immediate evacuation or access to hospitals is not possible.
The funding, secured with the assistance of Congressman Mike Lawler, will establish a collaborative initiative between NYMC, a member of Touro University, and the Uniformed Services University (USU), the nation’s federal health sciences university. The partnership will focus on strengthening medical responses in challenging environments, including military operations, natural disasters and mass casualty emergencies.
Led by NYMC’s Center for Disaster Medicine, the initiative will develop innovative treatment strategies, advanced medical protocols and specialized training resources to help military medical personnel and civilian first responders provide critical care when patients cannot be transported to medical facilities for extended periods.
The three-year program will incorporate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality, to enhance emergency medical training and improve decision-making in high-pressure situations. The initiative will also draw upon military and civilian medical research to develop practical solutions that can be implemented nationwide.
The project will unfold in three phases, beginning with an evaluation of existing research and practices, followed by the development of new treatment methods and educational resources, and concluding with pilot testing and distribution to military and civilian emergency response organizations.
This substantial federal investment highlights New York Medical College’s leadership in medical innovation, emergency preparedness and healthcare education, while reinforcing Westchester County’s growing reputation as a center for groundbreaking research and scientific advancement.
The BCW congratulates New York Medical College and its partners on this remarkable achievement and looks forward to seeing the lasting impact of this initiative on healthcare, public safety and emergency response both locally and nationwide.
