White Plains Transit Development RFP Deadline Nearing Nov. 1

Westchester’s transit-oriented development continues to attract the attention of cities and developers, this time with the City of White Plains seeking responses to a request for proposals (RFP) for the possible redevelopment of four properties strategically located next to the Metro-North Railroad station.

RFPs are due to the city’s Planning Department by 4 p.m. on Nov 1. Three of the four parcels in the Transit District RFP are owned by the city; the fourth is owned by the White Plains Urban Renewal Agency. Together, they make up approximately 4.5 acres along the east side of the railroad station.

“There is a great deal of interest in our Transit District, which is gratifying, but not surprising,” Mayor Tom Roach told the Westchester County Business Journal.

At the June 27 information session, more than 80 people attended to learn more about the RFP.

“In the information session we shared the importance of any project being environmentally progressive, providing affordable housing and street-level retail, as well as improving the pedestrian and bike experience and connections to the rest of our downtown,” Roach told the WCBJ.

As Westchester’s only business membership organization focusing on economic development and advocacy, The Business Council of Westchester has long championed the development of transit-oriented properties.

“The White Plains RFP presents such an exciting opportunity,” said Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of the BCW. “Transit-oriented development is vital to the prosperity of our urban centers and will continue to lead the way for Westchester as a welcoming place to live, work and play. I’m sure I join with many when I say I can’t wait to see what is proposed.”
