Twelve municipalities in Westchester County are among the 335 statewide that have launched applications to be certified as Pro-Housing Communities, 162 of which have already been certified, including major cities in every region of the state. Gov. Kathy Hochul made the announcement on August 12 while touring Three Mile Harbor Housing in East Hampton, a recently certified Pro-Housing Community. In an effort to determine if batteries using zinc-manganese technology are better and safer than lithium-ion batteries for large scale storage of electricity, New York Power Authority, headquartered in White Plains, along with Urban Electric Power (UEP), which is based in Pearl River and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) are planning to establish demonstration projects in Westchester County and at the campus of SUNY Oneonta.
